Exceptional Football Weekend for MONTANA Crew – and all Montanans! (posted 12-12-21)
What a weekend!
Montana State University’s exciting FCS quarterfinal win against Sam Houston State in Huntsville, TX, on Saturday night, December 11, was a fitting way to help young crew members of the future USS MONTANA get a fun taste of Montana’s sports culture and grit. A number watched online and/or read about the game.
The upset 42-19 Bobcat win over the #1-seeded Bearkats also reminded us of the great reception that the captain of the MONTANA, Commander Jon Quimby, received when introduced on the field at the first regular season Bobcat home game on 9/11.
It’s a certainty that MONTANA sailors will be watching and rooting for the ‘Cats this-coming Saturday afternoon when they play the South Carolina State Bulldogs in Bozeman.
Crew members of the MONTANA also had an in-person Montana sports experience on Friday night in Harrisonburg, Virginia. They were there for yet another FCS quarterfinal game featuring a Big Sky Country team. The University of Montana Grizzlies played the James Madison University Dukes.
The sailors made the three-hour drive from Newport News, VA, where the MONTANA is awaiting sea trials. And while the Griz didn’t win (JMU 28, UM 6), the crew members were warmly welcomed by Montana fans and told us they had a great time!
It was very moving to see the national TV recognition provided by ESPN. During the game the sailors were shown in the stands and the announcers talked about them and the future USS MONTANA that they will soon take to sea.
Finally, of course we have to mention the fun Amy-Navy game, also on Saturday, that the Midshipmen won 17-13.
Indeed, it was an exceptional football weekend for the MONTANA crew and all Montanans.
For next weekend: Go Cats!
